If you've just been in a collision or skidded off the road, your first thought might be: "I'll call my breakdown provider." Unfortunately, many UK drivers discover too late that standard breakdown cover does not include accident recovery.
This guide explains the gap between breakdown cover and accident recovery — and how to fill it.
Breakdown vs accident: what's the difference?
A breakdown is a mechanical or electrical failure that stops your vehicle running — a flat battery, a blown tyre, an engine fault or an alternator issue. Breakdown cover is designed for mechanical failure, not damage caused by impact.
An accident is a collision, crash or road traffic incident where the vehicle is damaged through impact. Even if the car won't start afterwards, most breakdown policies classify this as accident damage, not breakdown.
What does standard breakdown cover include?
Most UK breakdown policies (including RAC, AA and Green Flag) cover the following roadside scenarios:
- Flat battery jump-starts at the roadside.
- Tyre changes using your spare wheel.
- Fuel delivery if you run out of petrol or diesel.
- Minor mechanical repairs to get you moving again.
- Towing to a local garage if the vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside.
What is not covered by breakdown policies?
Here's where the gap catches drivers out. Most standard breakdown policies exclude or severely limit the situations below.
Some premium packages offer limited "home start" or "national recovery" add-ons, but even these typically exclude accident-related towing unless you pay extra for a specific accident-recovery rider — and even then, coverage is often capped at a short distance.
- Recovery after a road traffic collision or crash.
- Vehicles with significant body or structural damage.
- Accidents where the car is undriveable due to impact damage.
- Recovery from motorways after serious incidents, often redirected to police-appointed services.
- Transport of damaged vehicles over long distances.
What should you do after an accident?
- Ensure safety first. Move to a safe location if possible, switch on hazard lights, and call emergency services if anyone is injured.
- Do not assume your breakdown cover will help. Check your policy documents or call your provider — many will simply tell you to contact a private recovery operator.
- Call a specialist accident recovery service with the right equipment (flatbed or tilt-and-slide) and the experience to handle damaged vehicles safely.
- Keep records. Photograph the scene and the damage, and request a receipt from the recovery operator for insurance purposes.
